I’m not talking about the concept of freedom, just by the by. I’m talking about time management software called ‘Freedom’. Glad we’ve cleared that up. Don’t want to be starting a revolution over here.

Freedom is a very small but very handy piece of software available for both Windows and OSX. The software has a single purpose, and that is to turn off your Internet for a specified period of time, thus freeing you up to do more important things. It’s FREEDOM, get it?!

To give you an indication of why I personally needed this software, here’s how my time management goes at present:

09:00 - So let’s turn on the computer. I’m going to do SO FREAKING MUCH writing today.

09:02 - I’ll just check Twitter really quick, see if anyone @replied to any of my witty banter from last night. No replies. But a retweet. And a favourite! Must thank them. Ohh, look, a new post from my favourite writer friend! I’ll just go read that. Ohh, look! Google Reader has new posts from more writer types. I’ll just check those out. Won’t take a minute. Oh hey, a new video from my favourite TGWTG contributor is up! Ohh, what’s that post about the state of publishing in the advent of eReaders? I’d better read that. Could be important. Oh, what a charming picture of a dog wearing a party hat on Facebook. Must share that! Wait, is that a new trailer for that film I really want to see?! I must watch this right now. It can’t wait. Hey, look, new videos from my favourite YouTubers. Go on then, I’ll just watch a couple. Oh look, something that I’ve already seen a million times is now available on NetFlix! I’m really in the mood for a specific brand of comedic adventures right now. Mustn’t forget to check my e-mails: might have some beta reader responses. No responses, but look! New listed items on eBay! Oh hey, Tumblr! Look at that animated gif! That’s the most clever and witty animated gif I’ve ever seen in my entire online life. I must reblog it.

15:00 – Shit.

You could turn around and say:

Hey, here’s an idea. Why don’t you just unplug your Ethernet cable for an hour instead?

To which I’d say:

Hey, here’s a retort. You try crawling around under a desk that’s got a weeks’ worth of post under it, plus a pair of fingerless gloves you bought yourself on impulse before realising how ridiculous they are.

I could always unplug it from the top, cut it off at the source, you may be thinking. Well…

That's it, behind the AMALGAMATION OF SHIT.

Besides, if you’re living in a household where the Internet is shared, unplugging anything could plunge the whole house into darkness, and that, well that would just be chaos, and nobody wants that.

Enough of your life story. Nobody cares. What does Freedom actually DO?

In a nutshell, you tell Freedom how long you would like to work distraction-free, put in your minutes (up to 8 hours), click OK, and you’re done.

Your PC/Mac loses all its networking facilities for the amount of time you specified.

There is no way to undo this decision, short of restarting your machine.

The intention is that you will take the opportunity of “freedom” from the big, bad, alluring Internet to work.

Why not just do it manually?

Granted, it is a relatively simple task to manually turn off your Internet (particularly on the Mac – you click, Turn AirPort Off, and BOOM, gone), turning it back on when you’re done with your creative genius. The problem with this is that you are still the one in control of your Internet access. There’s no point turning off your Internet with the very best of intentions, only to turn around 3 minutes later and turn it back on “just to check for one e-mail”, thus starting the cycle all over again.

Freedom takes away the chance to relapse.

You tell it what you want to. It stops you from deviating from it.

Any downsides?

This isn’t so much a downside, more of a warning: The software is only useful if you are aware of its purpose.

An example of what I mean by that:

I have a PC, a Mac, an iPhone and an iPad. I have purchased a Freedom licence for both PC and Mac, meaning that – should I feel it necessary – I could run it on both computers simultaneously, thus taking out any chance of turning to the Internet on those. However, it wouldn’t take that much effort to lean over and pick up my phone, and then I’ll be off on the Information Superhighway faster than you can blink.

You need to remind yourself that there’s a reason you can’t get onto the Internet right now. The software is only as strong as your self control.

Also, I have a personal issue with this program, considering I can’t even think about the word “Freedom” without getting this is my head:

...or something to that effect.

Yeah. But that aside, Freedom is a great, simple little app that does exactly what it says on the tin.

There really isn’t much else to say other than it works.

I mean, it’s nothing spectacular, but then it doesn’t have to be. It has a purpose to serve, and it serves it perfectly.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

You can buy Freedom from the developer’s web site, including free trial versions for both PC and Mac versions, enable 5 free uses before deciding whether to hand over your heard earned dolla.

(I’ve written this post as a means of procrastination so as not to have to work on my current WIP. The irony is not lost on me. Freedom is going on as soon as I’ve posted. Promise!)

Greetings! Pull up a chair. Oh, you’re already sitting down. Never mind, then.

Right, so I was going to go into this huge spiel about how pathetic and depressing 2011 was for me, and to share with anyone who cares to read it about how awful things were and how badly I handled everything and how I dropped myself into whole oceans worth of shit.

But you know what? No one will want to hear about it, and I don’t particularly want to write about it or even remember it, so fuck it, I won’t.

Instead, I’m going to talk about the good things I have to look forward to in 2012.

So I finished the novel I was working on for NaNoWriMo 2011. Woo. It is out with more beta readers as we speak, and I am sitting on my hands while I wait to hear back from them, chewing the skin around my nails like a rabid rodent.

I fully, fully intend to have this book released for public consumption by the middle/back-end of this year. The thing and/or problem with this particular book is that it’s been around in some form or another for a looooooong time now, and yet I feel I can’t move onto bigger, better things until I’m happy that the foundation I’ve created is solid. So the first book is winging its way back through beta readers and hopefully a variety of opinions will be winging their way to me very soon!

That said, I’ve started editing the second book, still (currently) titled “The Vampire’s Son”, my 2009 NaNoWriMo, which basically looks like a kneaded turd right now.

No, that’s not fair. The parts that are done are pretty decent, in all fairness. But then there are g a p i n g chasms where whole chapters should be, frayed and unfinished scenes, entire plot threads have unravelled and dangle loose, with the threat of the slightest breeze blowing them away. So it looks more like a moth-eaten blanket found buried in the basement, covered in dust and dead spiders.

But it’s definitely workable, and what’s there is good, if I do say so myself.

Anyway, that’s where I’m at with writing right now.

I’ve stopped playing World of Warcraft for an indefinite period, simply because when I do play, it takes over my entire life, and I actually have other things I’m supposed to be doing.

I love the game, and by playing it I’ve managed to meet people who I can say with some degree of confidence I would never have met otherwise. But I just don’t have the time for it. I only hope that soon I will get the time to be able to return to GlenCoco, my Worgen warrior, and get back to those heady nights of drunk tanking and getting everyone killed.

Even without WoW, I’m still managing to get in a fair amount of procrastination, though – if I do say so myself – it’s not as much as this time last year. I’d like to think it might be in part because of the wake up call that 2011 actually was.

I’m blaming NetFlix for the new bout of mind wandering, since that’s just been released in the UK, and of course I had to sign up for the free month.

Anyway, that’s where I am with everything else right now.

I have some plans/announcements that I’m going to be bursting out in the next few days/weeks for the VS series, so keep your lids peeled for that.

I plan to get back into the swing of updating this site as well, since it seems a little forlorn and filled with melancholy right now. I have a number of “Music to Write Novels By” posts still waiting in the wings, so I should be able to ease myself back in with a few of those.

Onwards and upwards, people!

2012 is the year!

So the end of NaNoWriMo 2011 looms.

Am I on target? No.

Shitteth has hitteth the fan…eth. Oh it’s all going on like party central over here right now.

I am still managing to sit down and force some stuff out, hence the not-entirely-pitiful word count so far.

Do I think I’ll be able to get to 50,000 words by the 30th? I should hope so.

I don’t have any other major events happening between now and then, so if I stick to it (and, according to the NaNo estimator thingy, churn out 2,087 words instead of the 1,667 starting estimate), I should be OK.

Out of curiosity, I also entered the current word dump into Wordle. Here’s the outlook so far:

So it’s pretty much the same as last year’s, all full of people “thinking” “back” to their “eyes”. I also like…the word ‘like’…a lot, apparently. I like ‘like’ a lot.

In other news, I have a Kindle now. T’was a very early Christmas/birthday gift.

I’ll be honest, I’m surprised I got this far without buying one myself.

I have already bought more books than I can likely ever get through (or even afford right now, but that’s a whole other, far less light-hearted story), and I have high hopes for it.

P.S. No, that’s not a crack. It’s a cat hair. Damn things get EVERYWHERE.

Anyway, that’s all for now. Back to it!

There isn’t much else I can say except if you like Scrivener for Mac, and you have a PC, you will want this software.

And if you only have a PC, or for whatever inexplicable reason, you’ve never used Scrivener on your Mac before, you will still want to get this software. With a 30 day non-consecutive trial, what do you have to lose?

You can still read all the previous MTWNBs here.

As for NaNoWriMo 2011 progress…it’s probably better you don’t ask me that just now. It’s been one hell of a week.

Next week, hopefully, everything will calm down and I’ll be able to get back into the swing of things. I currently need to write 2492 words a day (assuming I’m not working weekends) in order to finish on time. More than do-able, provided I don’t have a repeat of last week again.

Caio!

Alright, so NaNoWriMo kind of crept up on me this year. With everything else that’s been going on in my life, it’s like “who the fuck cares about a little writing competition?! You have real life shit to worry about, woman”. But then I realise that I’ve been in this limbo since September, and while I’ve gone nowhere, be it personally or creatively, the world has continued to turn. Like a recent fortune cookie said to me: “Time waits for no man”.

Therefore, I have no choice but to throw myself head-first into the NaNo challenge this year.

I still have a book that remains unfinished. That chapter needs to be closed before I can move onto the other stories I have yet to write.

My 50,000 words will be new scenes built around the existing template, working towards the goal of having a completed final draft by the end of November, regardless of what else is happening in my life.

Here’s page 1 of my (currently 14-page) plan:

I can’t show you any more than this first page since it goes into details that might spoil the story for all six of you who read the finished piece.

But, in essence, it outlines my mental state for the remainder of this month. Basically, from Monday to Friday, I’ll be freaking the hell out (by waking up at 5am and working 2.5 hours before ‘work’ each day*), and then at the weekends – based on the success of the week – I will be rejoicing at my success or descending into a pit of despair.

I have recently learned that if I do not set myself definite and constant goals, I quickly fall off the wagon. After speaking with Muse, it has also been decided that I shouldn’t be drinking for my writing this month. That’s going to be a spectacle in itself since I’m hoping to get all my writing done by 7AM, and if I’m drinking by 7AM, surely that’s grounds for committal?! But anyway, that’s another goal I have to look forward to.

I am hoping that NaNo this year will be the push I need to force myself back into a workable routine.

I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone taking part in NaNoWriMo 2011 the very best of luck, and I hope to see you victorious on the other side!

* I tried this approach for 2009′s NaNo, with mixed results: some mornings I was up with the lark, others I just cried myself back to sleep.

OK, just to forewarn you, this is going to be a big one (that’s what she said, hur hur), because I’ve been waiting a long time to get the opportunity to talk about Final Fantasy VII, and – on the off-chance that you have never played Final Fantasy VII – be aware that story spoilers are more than likely. If you want to skip the story and move straight to the tunes: I don’t care about your life story, woman, just tell me about the music…

To give you an idea of how much I love the music from Final Fantasy VII, I walked down the aisle to one of the songs. So, yeah, I think it’s safe to say I’m a big fan.

Fans of the Final Fantasy games can usually* be placed into one of these categories:

The ones who liked any/all of the Final Fantasies from I – VI but abhorrently detest anything from VII onwards because of the following it got and the fanboyism that blossomed from it.

The ones who’d never heard of Final Fantasy series before VII was released, who thought that all the games were the same, and after – if not before – Final Fantasy X, realised that wasn’t the case, and gave in, defeated and crying into their Red XIII action figure’s arms (this is my area).

The ones who are adamant in believing that Squaresoft/Square Enix are incapable of producing anything but pure gold, and who not only buy but actually play every Final Fantasy release, including the MMO’s.

The ones who liked Final Fantasy IX.

There is no doubting that Final Fantasy VII was a gaming phenomenon. It was rendered polygons, for Christ’s sake. That was a big deal back in 1997. Final Fantasy VII got TV adverts in the UK, and that alone should be enough to make you realise what a big deal that was.

I vaguely remember seeing a TV ad for the game, and I’m fairly sure it was this one:

The reason why I’m fairly sure it was this one? Well, out of the three TV “spots” available on YouTube, this one is the only one with Cloud ‘falling’ and Tifa ‘screaming’ after him, and remember watching that particular scene on the TV, aged 13, thinking very clearly…”look at the SIZE of those breasts!”.

“She’s got HUGE…tracts of land.”

Whether it was because of the beautiful graphics or just to feed my latent lesbianism, the whole reason I wanted a PlayStation was to play this game. There is truth behind the quote that Final Fantasy VII was “the game that sold the PlayStation” [...]. It certainly sold it to me. I played this game…SO much. I pretended to be ill to miss school and play this game. I even had the Bradygames Strategy guide, which I later ripped to pieces to stick the map from the back page on my bedroom wall.

I love almost everything about this game (that isn’t to say I love it all: the motorcycle and snowboarding minigames need to die in a fire, along with the Master Tonberry and that fucking Emerald WEAPON for waiting outside the Sunken Gelnika when I’m not ready, like a bitch! Ahem.). The storyline is deep and engrossing, and the graphics for their time were amazing with a great amount of charm, even by today’s standards.

I also don’t love the fact that Aeris (or Aerith – my version of the game had Aeris, so she’s always been Aeris (or Big Bum) to me) dies.

Spoiler alert: she’s dead.

My first time playing through this game, I liked Aeris. That is to say, I liked her in the fights, since she had the most kick-ass magic strengths and her limit breaks made you freaking invincible. As a character, however, she kind of grated on me (I’m Team Tifa, huah!), and I really didn’t appreciate how she got inbetween her and Cloud…

…and before you say anything, Aeris and Cloud are not soul mates. Aeris only really liked Cloud because he reminded her of Zack, m’kay? Now she and Zack are both dead and returned to the planet, and Cloud and Tifa are free to bump uglies all they like.

In any case, I still liked Aeris, and I didn’t know she was going to die. I was devastated when Sephiroth killed her and spent the rest of the game waiting for her miraculous return. And she didn’t come back. *sob*

In any case, the game was brilliant, and still is, even by today’s standards. I’ve said this before, but amazing graphics do not a good game make. Provided the gameplay is good, you can overlook aged graphics. That’s the reason 3 out of my top 5 favourite video games are still PlayStation 1 releases.

Now, as mentioned above, I am firmly set into Fan Category #2. I didn’t realise at the VII was a part number, when I bought it; I figured it was a number of characters or something to that effect, like in Oceans Eleven, you know? Easy mistake to make, and I can’t have been the only one.

That is not to say I didn’t enjoy the later Final Fantasy games. At least, not straight away. When I started playing VIII, for example, I was of the belief that all the Final Fantasies would be set in the same world; I was very disappointed when I realised that not only were these people actually people-shaped instead of the polygonal masterpieces I’d come to love, but Red XIII, Vincent, Yuffie, Tifa and the rest were nowhere to be seen.

“Midgar? What’s that?” the Final Fantasy VIII disk asked, a dark mocking tone shining in its reflective surface.

I still completed VIII, but I did so begrudgingly, and each time a fight scene opened or closed, all I could think was: “You’re not Cloud. Your hair colour’s all wrong, you’re far too skinny, and your sword isn’t big enough (that’s what she said!).”

Who would win in a fight? ~ (Image Sauce).

I even gave X a good try (I skipped IX, though I couldn’t tell you why, although after picking that up a few years later, I don’t think I missed much), and finished it, for that matter, and while I wanted to stab Tidus in his stupidly tanned face every time he opened his mouth, the rest of the game wasn’t that bad at all. I quite liked Yuna, and that cat-type guardian thing she had…Kalamari or whatever he was called.

But VII had itself buried deep in my heart, and I happily danced to the beat of Square Enix’s drum and bought everything that followed on, and in danger of this little blog post turning into a memoir, I’ll summarise them in a sentence each:

“Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children” was a visually impressive look at the Final Fantasy VII universe, but the story pulled long-time fans away from the core group to focus on something that nobody really cared that much about.

Rude & Reno saved the “Advent Children” day for me.

“Final Fantasy: Dirge of Cerberus” was an underwhelming action shooter, but it was about Vincent, so we didn’t come down too harshly on it.

Looked great, played…not so great.

“Final Fantasy: Crisis Core” was a great look into Zack’s life (and death), tied in very nicely with the original game, although I found the combat system more of an irritant than anything even remotely engaging.

I promised myself I wouldn’t cry… *bawls*

Anyway, I’m so far off-base I can’t even see the starting line anymore. I’m supposed to be talking about the music.

Let’s move on before I drown in my own nostalgia.

The Music

Let’s get to the business-end of this post already!

Skip to:

Final Fantasy VII Music
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Music
Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus Music
Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core Music
Covers

Final Fantasy VII

We’ll start from the beginning, with the original PlayStation game’s music, and the most iconic of which is obviously Aerith’s theme:

Christ, when this thing kicks in, you know something sad’s about to happen.

Another tearjerker moment (and yes, I actually do cry like a pussy when I play this part) is when Red XIII learns that his father didn’t abandon his people to save himself and instead sacrificed himself so that the people of Cosmo Canyon could live…oh man, there’s a lot of death in this game, huh? You can only hear this song at one point in the game, but it stays with you:

In case you’re curious, the scene itself can be seen here. It’s so sad. Poor Red. Just listen to him when he howls. Awwwwwwww.

Let’s move onto something a little less depressing before we all start slitting our wrists.

How about some bad guy music? How about some SHINRA music?

Now, I appreciate that this particular piece might sound a little dated to those of you who didn’t hear it for the first time when President Shinra’s helicopter flew him into the mako reactor. But listen, it’s still well composed, has a nice, building amount of threat, easy to picture a very tense moment going on to this backing.

When I’m writing my Slayers and other ‘big bads’, I use the Shinra music. It has a corporate, overpowering feel to it.

Another favourite is:

It just starts so quietly, like a heartbeat, then all of a sudden BOOM, SHIT IT’S ALL COMING DOWN, WE’RE GONNA DIIIIIIIIEEEEEEE. Or maybe that’s just my interpretation. It doesn’t help that this is played during that part in the game where Sephiroth’s obviously gone mad.

And while I could talk all day about every single one of VII’s in-game musical tracks, I feel again that I should move on. Let’s end with something a little calmer and…

HOLY FUCK, IT’S SEPHIROTH!

Just LISTEN to that violin. SCREE SCREE SCREE SCREE! SCREE SCREE SCREE SCREE!

That’s some intense shit.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

For the advent children soundtrack, many of the original game songs were re-orchestrated, including the fight music:

But it also included a large number of new pieces. Highlights for me include:

I love this track again because of its build up. It kind of reminds me of Jaws, and I mean that in a good way.

Below is the music played through the end credits of Advent Children. At least, it’s played through one version. It’s on the bootleg copy of AC I got off eBay shortly before the English version was released, at any rate, and that’s good enough for me:

It’s kind of upbeat. It’s like an adventure theme, you could imagine driving with the windows open and your arm stuck out, soaking up the rays of sunshine with a shit-eating grin on yuor face.

And this the track I used for my own personal ‘big day’:

Of course, I personally can’t use this when writing anymore, since all I can think about when I hear this is me practically running down the aisle because I hated all the eyes focused on me and wanted to sit down. But still, I can appreciate a beautiful, gentle piece of music when I hear it. Except for the fact that Cloud’s ‘smile’ is pretty damn creepy. Sorry to ruin the illusion, but just look at it up there. It’s like it’s causing him actual, physical pain.

Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus

A lot of the DoC soundtrack errs on the side of melancholy, with many tracks focusing on piano and high-pitched string instruments to evoke painful memories. Whether that’s because Vincent’s story is essentially a tragic one or not remains to be seen, but highlights for me include:

There seems to be a lot more emphasis on stringed instruments in this soundtrack.

Unfortunately, I don’t have that much to say about the game itself, since I only played about three hours of it before giving it up as a bad job. Sorry. But I did buy the CD. In fact, it was one of the last physical CD’s I ever bought, before the advent of the Internet and the great beast that is iTunes came along.

Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core

Much like the PlayStation and Final Fantasy VII, the fact that Crisis Core was only coming out on the PSP gave me enough incentive to go out and buy one. Now, however many years on, I still only use my PSP to occasionally play this game, as well as the classic PSOne games (including, of course, the original FF7) from the PlayStation Network. I’m still waiting for Tomb Raider II to be released.

Here’s another re-orchestrated version of Aeris’ theme, this time mixed in with guitars, which a YouTube commenter has already pointed out is like Zack’s instrument of choice. Mixing it in with the softer piano and strings composition gave this already classic track a more contemporary, while at the same maintaining its original beauty. It’s less of a tragic piece here, more like a love song.

You listen to this track, on the other hand, and your brain will feel like it’s been put in a blender, but you’ll enjoy every second of it before it turns to mush.

I actually think the music from Crisis Core is my favourite out of the whole lot. I know that might sound a little weird, but in essence it’s the things that made the original game music so appealing, while at the same time breaking free from the MIDI restrictions imposed on the original game.

I should also point out I never actually finished Crisis Core, either, which bugs the hell out of me, because I love the story and really wanted to see where it headed. But after Sephiroth kept kicking the shit out of me in the Nibelheim reactor, I almost threw the PSP against the wall. Maybe one day I’ll persevere and level up some more. I’m sure it will be worth it.

Covers & YouTube Exclusives

The thing with having a game with such immense popularity in a time when the Internet exists is that there are going to be people who build upon the foundations Nobuo Uematsu and the others created.

Some of them are shit, but others are pretty freaking sweet.

Take, for example, Cid’s theme. The original you can hear here, which kicks a lot of ass all by itself, but then check out this duo version covered by a pair of YouTubers:

And the same theme but with guitars:

What a difference! And yes, I am showing Cid’s theme plenty of attention. It’s an amazing theme, and Cid was such a freaking a badass, he deserves to have the most empowering piece in the game. All he did was smoke and swear and demand cups of tea. He’s, like, my hero.

It’s funny cuz it’s true! ~ Image Sauce

And you remember up higher I commented on the Shinra theme sounding a little dated by today’s standards? Well, listen to this fan made remastering:

Sexy stuff, amirite? It’s a little less intense than the original, but personally I think it makes it a very powerful piece.

There are too many others to list here, but if you click on any of the above videos, you should be able to find related cover tracks to just about every FF7 song out there.

Music to Write ALL Scenes By…

There is such a large variation to the music in Final Fantasy VII, it’s too much to pigeon-hole the whole thing into a specific ‘mood’. Fight scenes naturally work well with the fight music, and your characters’ death beds might work nicely to accompaniment from just about any of the Dirge of Cerberus soundtracks.

Fans of the games themselves might struggle using some of the music to write to, since most of the tracks have specific scenes attached to them, and it might be an issue to disassociate the games with the writing. Unless you’re writing fan fiction, of course!

More Information / Further Reading

If you want to read more about the Final Fantasy VII universe, I personally recommend the Wikia site. Start with Cloud’s, as linked, and move around from there.

You can buy the official soundtracks from the following places:

Finally, to close, it has nothing to do with the music from Final Fantasy VII, but I found this fan-made trailer (FF7 fans are the bestest), and it’s EPIC, so after that huge list of ‘still’ videos, please appreciate this depiction of the fight between Cloud and Sephiroth.

You’re a cock, Sephiroth, but I still love you.

Shadow of the Colossus is a PlayStation 2 game released in 2005 (and re-released in HD for the PS3 in 2011). It tells the story of a young man who ventures into a forbidden land in the hope of reviving his dead girlfriend, and who is instructed by forces unknown to kill the creatures (the colossi) that inhabit this vast landscape in order to restore life to his beloved.

Kill all 16 of these majestic, building-sized beasts,
and you might get what you want…but at a price!
(Watch a video of this particular fight here)

The game, while stunning, is almost depressing to play through, not least for the fact that the colossi, gargantuan though they are, seem only to be mildly disconcerted by your presence, and only panic when you drive your sword into their weak spots to force them to the ground.

The game itself has been heralded as a work of art, and is cited as an influential game in the industry(*), although it’s debatable whether this or its predecessor, Ico, is truly more innovative. I’ll get to Ico soon.

Shadow of the Colossus is a brilliant and beautiful game, even by today’s standards, and all the moreso thanks to the HD re-release.

The Music

It should go without saying that the music tracks in Shadow of the Colossus are largely tragic pieces.

This is from one of the fights. You can almost hear the desperation in those strings. I think of someone battling against the odds when I hear this, and not necessarily being the one to come out on top, despite their very best attempts.

This is a particularly sad piece. You know the bit in the Lion King where…well, where you know what happens? I could see this playing here. And when the tone shifts, that’s the point where Scar emerges from the smoke and forces Simba to flee.

I’m thinking of a hopeless moment; the child who wakes to find his home mere ashes in the first bursts of sunrise, or where the woman finds her flatmate dead in the bath with a few solitary drops of blood splashing onto white tiles. Or, if we’re not talking quite so morbidly…maybe the point where your hero is looking out on the road ahead of him, realising that he may come out of this a better person, but the journey he has to take is going to all but destroy him.

Kind of like the game itself, in that sense.

I hesitate to say this particular piece is an ‘upbeat’ track, since that’s only true when compared to the rest of the music, but still, it’s a nice piece and suits well to thoughts of travel, or perhaps a journey that must be made. Alternatively, the aftermath of a great battle, where the dust is settled and the hero stands for the first time as the victor, but having lost all that he held most dear.

Music to Write Tragic Scenes By…

There’s nothing in this soundtrack that’s truly uplifting; the use of minor keys and minimalist compositions can leave you watery-eyed without much effort. You would do well to draft deeply introverted scenes to this, perhaps a point where your protagonist questions his very existence, wondering whether it is worth fighting the good fight at all.

More Information / Further Reading

If you have a PlayStation 2 or PlayStation 3, I can’t recommend the game itself enough, so really…get it. You can find it from all the retailers, both online and in-store.

You can buy the CD from Amazon & Amazon UK

It’s safe to assume that you have at least heard of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, whether through the book itself, the Disney classic based on it, the Tim Burton “re-imagining”, any of the lesser known TV movies based on it, or even the porno (yes, there’s a porno – click for a review, which is NSFW, for obvious reasons). But in October 2000, a PC game that explored a darker Wonderland was released for the PC.

Alice and the Cheshire Cat as they’re depicted in the game.

American McGee’s Alice told the continuing story of Alice Liddell after her childhood adventures in Wonderland. She’d never learned to let go of her makebelieve world, and – after being committed to an insane asylum following the death of her parents in a house fire – returns to Wonderland in her teens to find it a broken place that she is in danger of losing herself in.

While the game’s controls felt about as responsive as if you were playing with oven gloves on, overall it was great fun, with an immersive storyline, stunning visuals and voice acting, and with music capable of making small children weep.

In a very belated follow-up to the success of the first game, the sequel Alice: Madness Returns was released on a number of platforms in June this year.

Alice’s “Next Gen” appearance in Madness Returns.

The music for the original game was composed by sometimes N.I.N. live drummer and general ‘fingers in all pies’ session musician, Chris Vrenna, while the sequel’s music was mostly the work of Jason Tai.

Highlights in American McGee’s Alice for me include:

This song, Wonderland Woods, creates a mood of both childlike naivity and immense sadness, using a combination of tinkling xylophones and long, drawn-out notes on string instruments. I get a few different ‘feels’ from this track, but it’s usually something sad that’s happening. I could picture pallbearers struggling to carry a coffin through the rain, or maybe a wounded solider dragging himself through the mud because he’s lost his legs. It’s the kind of scene you could see with Atreyu and Artax in the Swamp of Sadness.

I love the Funhouse track; the high-pitched, jerky rhythm of whatever stringed instrument that is mixed in with incoherent babbling and howling winds.

If I ever wrote a story about giant marionettes that came to life and started to come to life and slaughter the people of a sleepy country village, this is the kind of music I’d envision them hobbling around to.

Listening to I’m Not Edible, I picture a victim, maybe strapped to a gurney, being wheeled down a hospital corridor. I see people hovering over them, talking, maybe there’s drugs in the character’s system, showing through the disortion of the old rhyme of ‘My Grandfather’s Clock’.

Moving onto the sequel, Madness Returns:

I can see a dream-like state working well to this, I get the sensation of a hazy environment, walking through mists, maybe the vague outline of a familiar person in the distance. In fact, I think this song’s title, Castles in the Sky, suits it very well.

I picture in my head some kind of deformed masquerade ball when I hear this, maybe like the scene in Labyrinth, without the weird Jareth/Sarah romance bit, or maybe this scene from the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice (plus the timing works with both scenes, if you put the videos on silent…and yes I have tried this, because I’m a goon).

When I listen to this, I firstly picture someone running through darkened corridors. I also see the kind of scene where someone frantically searches for clues, something they’ve happened upon once upon a time and didn’t realise the significance of until that just now, and when the piano kicks in, that’s the moment where the focus shifts from their face to the tattered old letter in their hand that reveals they are in fact related to the crazy old man whose house they’re currently trapped in.

NOTE: The videos used for the Madness Returns examples are actually extended versions of the soundtrack releases, since it’s a crying shame game soundtrack music tends to suffer from “Shorttrackitis”, and one very nice YouTuber has taken the liberty of sewing some of the loops together in a lovely fashion for us listener-types.

Music to Write ‘Crazy’ Scenes By…

It should come as no surprise that both soundtracks suit writing about anything you want to have a detached or macabre feel.

In the case of the original, some of the tracks are opened by brief, in-game dialogue (here’s one example, and here’s another). This may enhance or damage your inspiration, depending on whether you can draw anything from the words.

For me, personally, I think the original soundtrack does a better job of creating tracks that you get a proper feel of someone who might be losing their mind, whereas the sequel’s album creates a desolate and grim atmosphere, but not necessarily something quite so obscure.

I find both work well for me, but in different circumstances.
