30 Days of Writing: Day Nine

How do you get ideas for your characters? Describe the process of creating them.

Much like the names question on day three, I pick up ideas for my characters from just about anywhere, whether real life, celebrities, or dreams.

I also don’t really have a process as such for creating characters; as a need for a new person arises, they’re just kind of “born”, given a name and a general idea of appearance and background, then thrown in face-first and left to develop as a story progresses.

I do however treat many of my characters to the “Questions You Should Ask Your Character” before I start writing about them (I can’t remember where I got this from now, and since the only place on the net I can find it is here, I’m going to have to assume this is where it came from), mostly just to get it straight in my head (and theirs!) why this character exists.
